Decreasing central line associated blood
stream infections
The bone marrow transplant unit involved families in an initiative to decrease inpatient
central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI) rates to fewer than one in 1,000
line days. The plan partnered nurses with physicians and included enhanced patient and
parent education.
Each week, a physician and a nurse visit the central line patients to assess the IV line and
central line dressing (labeling, date of last change, cleanliness, intactness) and review the
patients’ medication lists for any IV medications that can potentially be changed to oral.
The pair educate parents and patients about the importance of mouth and body hygiene
and ask the families about the practices of the health care workers who are caring for
their child. This empowers the patients and their families to speak up when they notice a
violation of procedures.
Typically, about 40 patients are seen during a line round on the two inpatient units, and
there has been a noticeable decrease in CLABSIs.
