As a nurse leader, I played a considerable role in the planning and design of the Texas
Children’s Hospital West Campus pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). This was a
collaborative project that required the expertise of administrative leaders, staff nurses,
physicians, pharmacists and other clinical support areas. Nurses were able to lend clinical
expertise gained from providing bedside care in the units to help design a space that is
functional for the day-to-day roles and responsibilities. The organization recognizes nurses
have a unique, experience-based insight, a focus on patient safety and ideas for enhancing
accessibility of patients for nursing care. For the West Campus PICU, input from nurses
was instrumental in helping design our community pediatric intensive care unit to help
ensure the most optimal space was created for our patients.
