Finegold scholarship
The Joan M. Finegold Scholarship is dedicated each year to family members of nurses.
The award honors Joan Finegold, the wife of Texas Children’s Chief Emeritus of Pathology
Services Milton Finegold, MD. Joan was a nurse who cared deeply for children and
education. When she passed away, Finegold established this scholarship award in his wife’s
memory. The scholarship is awarded to the children of Texas Children’s nurses. Finegold
reviews applicants each year with Chief Nursing Officer Lori Armstrong and a Pathology
Department executive.
Since 1985, there have been 75 recipients of the Joan M. Finegold Scholarship Award.
In 2013, five nurse family members joined the recipients’ circle.
Nathaniel Carl
is a 4-year-old with developmental delays and special needs. His mother
is a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit. She plans to use the scholarship to help pay
for Nathaniel’s tuition at a school designed for his needs.
Kevin DeJesus
plans to follow in the footsteps of his mother, Ruby DeJesus, a nurse in
Texas Children’s neurology/neurosurgery unit. She said the money will give her son the
opportunity to pursue his dreams of becoming a nurse.
Clay Mathews
’ grandmother, Gay Matthews, is the assistant clinical director of the
cardiovascular intensive care unit and has worked at Texas Children’s for 21 years.
Clay recently graduated high school in the top 15 percent of his class of more than 900
students. He’s the oldest of four children to a single mother and has helped his mother
immensely with his siblings. The scholarship will help alleviate the impact his tuition
expenses will have on his family.
Forrest and SpencerWolfe
are brother and sister twin recipients of two Finegold
Awards. Their mother, Shawn, is a nurse in care management and has been with Texas
Children’s for 22 years. Forrest plans to attend the University of Texas, and Spencer is
going to attend the rival school, Texas A&M University. The twins say the scholarships will
reward their parents for their diligence in pushing them to succeed.
