Program provides funds for the extras that make Texas Children’s one-of-a-kind
purchase and submit for payment to The
Auxiliary.
The majority of the items are edu-
cational or developmental toys and books,
as well as items to help patients and fam-
ilies during treatments. However, requests
are varied and far-reaching.
This year, the program helped pay
printing costs for materials to educate
mothers and mothers-to-be about the ben-
efits of breastfeeding. They were crucial
to designation as a Baby-Friendly Hos-
pital, a global program of the World Health
Organization (WHO) and the United Na-
tions Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to en-
courage and recognize hospitals that offer
an optimal level of care for infant feeding
and mother/baby bonding.
“Breastfeeding provides the best out-
comes, both long and short-term, for moth-
ers and infants,” says Dr. Nancy Hurst,
director, Women’s Support Services. “This
designation ties in with our mission and
vision to provide the best care for women
and children, and the funds were essential
to this important project.”
Making a Difference Every Day
Wish list items are particularly important
to TCP practices, where items that help
distract children while they wait make it
easier for the parents as well.
“The wish list program is so valuable
to the patients and families TCP serves,”
says Kay Tittle, TCP president. “Sometimes
the small things, a book that brings a smile
or a game to pass the time, can make all
the difference in a patient’s or parent’s day.
We’re so grateful for the support this vital
initiative provides.”
