The seeds of generosity often are planted STRAIGHT FROM THE
in a place deep in the heart, rooted in a de-
sire to pay tribute. HEART

     Many volunteers have experienced
Texas Children’s from the other side, per-
haps as a patient or parent, or when some-
one they cared about was ill. They know
all too well about the fear, fatigue and tedi-
um that can settle in during a hospital visit.
On a deeply personal level, they are well
versed in the value of a smile, a few min-
utes diversion, a listening ear.

They unselfishly give their time to
touch hearts, as others touched theirs, in a
continuous circle of caring and compas-
sion.

                                                                       Jesse Romero

                                                                                                     Volunteer,  service hours

My daughter Gabriela (Gabby) was a patient at Texas
Children’s in 2007 because she had renal cell carcinoma.
They removed her left kidney, and we spent two weeks there.
Everyone gave Gabby such special care. They treated her

like she was the only patient in the hospital.
She has since passed away, and I have chosen to do
volunteer work there to help other children and families.

LANELL JARMON

My daughter Tiffany, now 28 years old, has
battled sickle cell anemia all her life. As a
child, she spent many months at Texas Chil-
dren’s. She received excellent care, as did
other patients I met.

Tiffany went on to become the Na-
tional Poster Child for sickle cell anemia
and now has a nonprofit devoted to edu-
cating others about the disease.

As a result of her experience and mine
as a parent, my first step after retirement
was to give back to this wonderful organ -
ization however I could. Of course that was
to volunteer and assist in any way I was
needed. It has been a joy to work with other
volunteers and to make each child and
their parents I come in contact with feel
very special.
